This is the first Chapter of the Nightland, what I consider to be Hodgson's greatest literary achievement. Despite some moments of purple prose and maudlin sentiment, it is a work of unparalleled imagination, of dark horror, and unpoken monsters. But most of all it ia a story about the triumph of love, even at the ends of time and in the final days of humanity.
